The Cuevas attack itself. Padre Pedro Cuevas requested an escort (soldiers Ignacio Alviso & Joaquín Higuera) to confess the sick at a Christian ranchería; in heavy fog the guide led them to a gentile ranchería claiming it Christian; arrows + great shouting, more came from nearby rancherías — Ignacio Higuera killed (= the *mayordomo*, per C26), Padre Cuevas wounded in the face, Joaquín Higuera in the thigh; saddle & spare horses killed; party besieged midday→dusk, losing all but their *cueras*, *adargas* & muskets.

To cite this catalogue entry itself, use https://archivesofcalifornia.com/record/ca12/ca12-d25.htmlThe originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
