Argüello reports the otter-fishing canoes still working INSIDE the port — up to 50 seen together; six neophytes of the nearby mission, sent to the far shore to fish lobos for their padres, were held some hours by the fishermen as suspected spies, then released; they report ~130 canoes between Puntas de Boneta and San Antonio. On word of canoes along the coast toward San Pedro y los Pilares, Argüello sent a sergeant with troops on a 3-day coastal patrol — no canoes found ashore, only traces on the beaches. The six Indians, asked the fleet's strength, 'regulan y comparan qᵉ excede á toda la gente' of the mission, women among them; no ship seen.
