Argüello reports Moraga's second reconnaissance (departed with 4 soldiers 'el 25 del pp.do' [Savage writes Oct.e with an interlinear query — read Agosto], returned 1 Sep): the grounded ship above Bodega was repaired and gone; at the port ~80 men under Comandante 'Coscof' [Kuskov], Russians of Unalaska/Kamchatka, arrived some 5 months earlier with two ships and now in great need of provisions. THE FORT: 'se están estableciendo porq.e están fortificándose y fabricando casas, pues ya tienen cerrado el cuadro, á modo de muralla,' of wood but strong and thick, ~150 varas around, 3½–4 varas high, 'con dos torreones ó baluartes opuestos, que el uno mira al mar, y el otro á la campaña,' quite elevated, with artillery (caliber unseen); dwellings rising within, the work well finished — they manifestly intend to establish themselves. Kuskov gave Moraga's party 'buen pasage'; Moraga rides to report verbally to the Governor. The earliest Spanish description of Fort Ross under construction. Published: Mathes (1990) Doc 10.
