Medical dictamen on California's climate & diseases (from José Benítez's tour of Monterey & missions)

Provincial State Papers, tomo XIX · BANC MSS C-A 12, document 57

Medical dictamen on California's climate & diseases (from José Benítez's tour of Monterey & missions): climate judged *healthy*, no endemic disease; illness comes from cold/exposure/bad water/poor diet and 'carnal disorders,' contact with the infected, and natives' reliance on empirical 'national doctors' over rational medicine; syphilis (gálico) frequent & severe. Proposes an infirmary for the gentiles — esp. vs. syphilis, which 'without aid ravages the populations.'
