Provincial State Papers, tomo XX · BANC MSS C-A 13, document 101

José de la Cruz → Gov. Alta Calif.: forwards the decree on the capture of the Anglo-American corvette 'Mercurio' by the Spanish frigate 'La Flora.' Not treated as a *corso* prize (the two states at peace), so ordered: a formal investigation of the illicit trade by the *Mercurio*'s captain Mr. George Ayres (Jorge Eyers) on the California coasts, and of why Don Nicolás de Noé (cmdr. of the *Flora*) boarded & seized her — a *comiso* matter under the Governor as Territorial Hacienda judge; per R.O. 25 Dec 1790 & 10 Aug 1802. Embeds Calleja's order (México 24 Apr 1814): Ayres was mistreated — robbery of cargo/effects, violence to his family — so secure his goods, don't bother him or separate him from his family, prevent extortion
