Gov. Solá → José de la Cruz (long, emotional)

Provincial State Papers, tomo XX · BANC MSS C-A 13, document 184

Gov. Solá → José de la Cruz (long, emotional): congratulates him on the rumored Viceroyalty and the surrender of 'the Island' [Mezcala/Chapala] (pardon to Vargas & Salgado); then pleads that the garrison has not received its accustomed pay in 7 years, officers & families 'en la indigencia,' the troops naked — ⭐ 'he tenido que despojarme de la mayor parte de mi ropa para cubrirles' (Solá has given away most of his own clothing) — while campaigning continuously against the 'Indios Gentiles,' guarding mission detachments & carrying mail; happier the last soldier than the governor; hopes relief after his 5-yr term
