- Previously read summary: 'Detailed ajuste of the Santa Bárbara company for 1782: Tte. Ortega $550; Alférez Argüello $400; 2 sargtos $525; 2 cabos $450; 49 soldados $10,657; gratificación $540; adjustments $…'. Leaf n158 (IA 168035972_79_17_2), printed stamp 155. Heading: '+ 1793 Oct. 20 Mont. / Gob.r Arrillaga - Ajuste de la Comp.a de Sta Barb.a / Por el ano de 1782.' Author (expanded to Jose Joaquin de Arrillaga, governor in 1793), place 'Mont.', date, closing citation 'pp 454 - 5' and stamp 155 all confirmed; no addressee is named on the leaf, so the blank recipient is legitimate. SUMMARY IS WRONG on the figures, in a record whose whole content is figures: (1) the leaf reads 'Aumentos y rebajas de sueldos por dias ... 501.2', not the catalogued '$521.2' - verified at 2x and confirmed arithmetically, since 550+400+525+450+10,657+540 = 13,122 and 13,122+501 = the leaf's own total 13,623, whereas 521 would not close; (2) 'Valor de dos facturas de generos &a' is 11,200.5.8 on the leaf, not '$1,200.58' - an order-of-magnitude error, and the check is exact: 13,195.7.10 1/2 minus 11,200.5.8 = 1,995.2.2, which is the very figure the catalogue relabels as a separate deduction 'agencias $1,995.2'; it is the remainder, not a rebaja; (3) the second deduction is not 'agency' but the Montepio - 'o p.a Montepio - 8 maravedises de cada peso de los $922.5 1/2 granos liquidos (despues de descontado invalidos) de $950 - del haber de 2 oficiales ... 27'. The items that are right: Ortega $550, Arguello $400, 2 sargentos $525, 2 cabos $450, 49 soldados $10,657, gratificacion $540, gross 13,623.6, invalidos 400.5 1/2, net 13,195.7, prior balance 2,353.7.4, final 4,349.1.7. OMISSIONS: the leaf carries this one document only.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
