The Pamó conspiracy & firing-squad execution of 4 Indian captains

Provincial State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo I–XIX · BANC MSS C-A 15, document 46

The Pamó conspiracy & firing-squad execution of 4 Indian captains. On 16 Mar, Benito, an Indian capitán, warned (via Fr. Lasuén) that the Indians of Pamó — esp. their capitán Aarán[?] — were gathering arms to kill Christians; 3 neighbouring captains + others 'del otro lado de la sierra' were in the plot, which had killed a fugitive from San Juan Capistrano. Aarán defied Ortega, daring the soldiers to come 'para cogerlos á mano y matarlos á macanazos.' Sargto Mariano Carrillo (+ cabo, 8 soldiers, 2 guides) surprised Pamó at 3am on 31 Mar; the captains were seized & bound; 2 Indians killed, a few burned in a house refusing to surrender; the rest submitted & were flogged. >1,500 arrows, 80+ bows & many war-clubs taken & burned. The 4 captains — Achil, Aalcuirin[?], Aarán, Taguaqui[?] Lasuén began instructing them; the condemned disposed to be baptized. (Savage notes a discrepancy in the certified copy.) Orig. pp.737–764, 767–769.
