State & needed reinforcement of the California presidios — response to the Viceroy's order to fortify against British ships & to occupy Bodega Bay. Acknowledges the Viceroy's order (24 Nov 1792) to put the new establishments 'en el posible mejor estado de defensa, por si algo de los buques ingleses que hoy cruzan esta costa arribasen… para que no observen nuestra debilidad,' and a second order resolving to occupy the puerto de la Bodega and fortify San Francisco, Monterey & San Diego. Reports the artillery state (SF 2 cannon, both unserviceable; Monterey 8 + 3 pedreros good; SB 2 + 1 pedrero; SD 3, dismounted/no gunners) and that the guard is 'imaginaria.' Proposes garrisons: SD 75, Monterey 75, SB 63, SF 51; a small San Blas schooner at Monterey & SF Oct–Apr; 'y si se ocupa la Bodega se necesitará una fuerza por eso.' Orig. pp.72–78.
