Provincial State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo XX–XXXIX · BANC MSS C-A 16, document 34

*Contratas de artesanos* — contracts (by order of Viceroy Branciforte, 19 June) with master artisans for New California: Joaquín Botello (with family, 5-yr term, $1,000/yr + ⅛ of his works' value, King's account) — ⚠ *this abstract reads 'mason,' but C-A 7 E20/Docs 362 & 373 and Botello's own Doc 132 below show Botello is the Sastre (tailor); the actual mason/cantero was Manuel Ruíz (C-A 7 Docs 373/541, $365). The 'mason Botello' here is a conflation — corrected 2026-06-30*; Manuel Martínez [C-A 7 reads *Listonero* Manuel Muñoz] (5 yr, $500/yr + ⅛); broadcloth weaver (*tejedor de la ancha*) Mariano Tobar Méndez [C-A 7 reads *Tejedor* Mariano José Mendoza] (2 family, 5 yr, $600/yr + ⅛), transport at the King's account. ⚠ Trade/name discrepancies with C-A 7's transcription of the same 19-Jun-1795 contracts — reconcile against the originals if cited. The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
