Capture of the American brig *Pedler* by the Spanish-chartered frigate *Eagle* in the ensenada de San Luis Obispo (26 Aug 1814). Cavenecia lured the *Pedler* by raising the U.S. flag, then hoisted the Spanish, fired 2 cannon-shots & boarded with 25 men. Papers seized: U.S. govt passport, property register, crew roll, accounts, a Russian passport from Nuevo Arcángel (Sitka) signed by Gen. Baranov, the cargo manifest & a drawing made aboard. Commander = Mr. Wilson P. Hunt (the Astorian / Pacific Fur Co.). Depositions: the *Pedler* came from Bodega, had carried Sandwich Islands goods for the Russian establishment, left some at Bodega, and sought the Russian brig *María* (alias *Lev*); pilot Gilbert Cárdenas[?] had loaded at Columbia [River] goods from 'el Gral. Ruso Granoff' for Bodega. Cargo inventory (Estudillo, 7 Sep): porcelain, glassware, sugar, coffee, beads, Russian wool, colored thread, painted cloth, shirts, pants, furs, hats, etc. Argüello (9 Sep) — since the *Pedler* truly sought the *María* to deliver the cargo, orders the captor to set sail and leave these coasts with cargo & papers. ⭐ Exposes the Baranov/RAC–Astor (Hunt) Pacific supply network through Bodega/Fort Ross.
