Sta Bárbara muster 1816 — embeds the Jan-1816 capture at the Refugio rancho: the comandante got a letter from Rancho del Refugio (Ortega's); Sgt. Carlos Carrillo warned that 2 ships were seen off 'la boca de las Islas' near the rancho; the alférez sortied that night with 14 men (troops, inválidos, vecinos). Over 14–20 Jan they captured 3 Americans, 2 Indians & Black prisoners + a boat ('apresado á Smith'); then 6 more Americans & the 2 captains; then the prize schooner — an otter-contraband crew taken at Refugio (links the C-A 12 Refugio/Eliot-de-Castro events). Company strength: Tte. de la Guerra, 3 sargtos, 6 cabos, 1 cadete, 56 soldados = 68 + Inválidos 28. Orig. pp.313–41
