'Desaprueba sus relaciones con los enemigos' — Solá rebukes de la Guerra for parleying with Bouchard

Provincial State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo XL–LII · BANC MSS C-A 17, document 260

'Desaprueba sus relaciones con los enemigos' — Solá rebukes de la Guerra for parleying with Bouchard. De la Guerra (oficio of the 7th) had parleyed under flag of truce with the enemy frigates at Sta Bárbara, agreeing to exchange the 3 prisoners Sgt. Carlos Carrillo took at the Rancho del Refugio for the prisoners Bouchard's frigates seized at the presidio, on 'la promesa que hizo… su caudillo Hipólito Bouchard, cesar toda acción hostil en cuanto comprende esta costa,' pending Solá's approval. Solá is 'escandalizado del atentado' of treating with pirates who fly no recognized flag; says that with the company + armed *vecindario* + Indian archers of San Isidro, Sta Bárbara, San Buenaventura & Purísima, de la Guerra showed 'poca ó ninguna disposición' to attack; orders him to keep vigilant & aid San Diego. The central document of the Bouchard prisoner-exchange controversy. Orig. pp.383
