Provincial State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo XL–LII · BANC MSS C-A 17, document 287

Supply-crisis complaints: urgent letters to the Viceroy (6 & 24 Sep) for money; the *San Carlos* & *Nueva Reyna* failed to bring the promised 400 muskets & 500 swords; only 5 six-pdrs + four-pdrs received; the 100 reinforcement men were 'sacados de las cárceles y cogidos en leva' (jailbirds & press-ganged) — 'de ellos no se espera sino dolores y resultas'; the 2-ship expedition cost the Real Erario 'muy cerca de $60,000'; the 400 saber-blades came without hilts. Vivid on the dysfunction of the post-Bouchard reinforcement. Orig. pp.412, 425
