Causa criminal — the neophyte Antonio/Rafael Chales flogged his wife María Gabriela to death (Mission San Diego). The escort cabo Pedro Lobo found her body whip-marked, 'de la cintura abajo, en los muslos, toda desollada, enseñando la carne viva.' Chales's confession: he beat her with a 'real doblado' + 25 lashes for a paper given by a gentile Indian she'd slept with 3 nights; she fell ill, he tried the native sweat-cure (heated hole + green herb, *frazada*) — she died Monday morning. Fiscal: among the Diéguinos, fear of punishment leads them to kill rather than leave a victim alive, then flee or take sanctuary; flogging-abuse 'se va haciendo común entre ellos.' Orig. pp.1077–1104

What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
