'Averiguación sobre expresiones del Padre Olbés en el púlpito' — a church-state conflict

Provincial State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo XL–LII · BANC MSS C-A 17, document 335

'Averiguación sobre expresiones del Padre Olbés en el púlpito' — a church-state conflict. Per Florentín Machuca's letter to Buelna, Fr. Ramón Olbés preached (28 Feb) that 'el Sr. Gob., oficiales, sargentos, cabos, y soldados todos se tapaban, y que aquí no había justicia' (the whole hierarchy covered up the mission theft), threatening to deny confession to the sick & burial in consecrated ground. Solá orders Estrada to investigate and make Olbés justify in writing 'expresiones tan escandalosas' from 'aquel paraje tan sagrado.' Witnesses (Machuca, the mayordomo Castro, Pedro Chabolla) confirm the sermon. Orig. pp.98–107

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
