'Preparativos de defensa' — the '150 machetes' order. With Fr. Prefect Mariano Payeras, Solá ordered 150 machetes + 150 cartridge-boxes made to arm the Monterey troops & some vecinos, for the shortage of swords; 2 model machetes made at Mission Soledad sent to the missions as patterns (each mission to make a share). PLUS a horse-relay defense plan: each named *paraje* between the missions (San Antonio–San Miguel, San Luis Obispo–Purísima, San Buenaventura–San Fernando, San Gabriel–San Juan Capistrano) to keep ≥150 horses for rapid troop remounts against the 'traitors' (Bouchard). Order grew to 200 machetes; 40 skilled Indian bowmen to be named at each mission (30 San Luis Obispo, 16 Soledad/San Carlos/Sta Cruz, 20 San Juan Bautista) as auxiliaries, each mission to elect an Indian 'capitán.' Includes a mission-by-mission machete/cartridge-box production quota (e.g., SF 10, Sta Clara 10, San Gabriel 24… = 150 + 150). Orig. pp.301–15

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
