Sumaria vs mission Indians (Anastasio & Apolonio, neófitos of Sta Inés; José of San Buenaventura; Mariano) for witchcraft/curanderismo: they staged a healing 'baile al diablo' over sick Indians of the ranchería for 2 nights, collecting beads/seeds/rosaries as payment, claiming the Devil would heal the dancers or all would die; named ~30 medicinal herbs; the curandero Anastasio threatened mockers with a 'máquina de yerbas' (poison bag) that could kill; the Padre Ministro had them whipped & jailed. Echeandía (23 Apr 1829): after 11 months' prison frees Apolonio, but Anastasio & José to receive 25 lashes each, administered publicly before the congregated Indians after Mass at Sta Inés, 'por haberse supuesto hechiceros' — indigenous healing/shamanism criminalized as *hechicería* under mission authority
