Investigation into the clandestine flight to Spain of Padre Fr

Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LIII–LXVIII · BANC MSS C-A 18, document 373

Investigation into the clandestine flight to Spain of Padre Fr. José Altimira (controversial founder of Mission San Francisco Solano / Sonoma, 1823) aboard an English-captained ship, Jan 1828: depositions of escort cabo Juan Lugo and mayordomos Crisóstomo Lugo & Vicente Pico on the cargas of provisions, wine, soap, vinegar, chocolate — and possibly mission silver/money moved aboard via Sta Bárbara; Padre Francisco Suñer left holding only the keys to the money/clothing/bodega. Includes Altimira's own farewell letter to 'Mi Sr Jorge [George] Coleman, inglés de nación y recién reconciliado por mí,' written aboard a bergantín [ship name uncertain in MS] 23 Jan 1828, lamenting abandoning 'esos pobres indios mis amados neófitos' and announcing his 'larguísima caminada… por mar á España, mi patria'; letter closes 'Tuyo = Fr. José Altimira' (ends n430, LXVII.215–227)
