Causa vs Serapio, neófito of Santa Clara, for the rape-murder of the boy Miguel (~11)

Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LIII–LXVIII · BANC MSS C-A 18, document 384

Causa vs Serapio, neófito of Santa Clara, for the rape-murder of the boy Miguel (~11): Serapio confessed he forced the boy (who had refused), then stabbed and killed him to keep him silent (26 Dec 1827); while a fugitive he killed 10 Sta Clara mission cattle, took 9 horses, and took church asylum at Sta Clara; fiscal recommends expatriation from the province. ⚠ Includes a colonial-discourse marginal note: 'Noticia de la sodomía entre los indios por el rumbo del Norte es algo común; lo mismo el estupro, y al matar las criaturas. Hay varios ejemplares públicos…' (a Spanish official generalizing about 'the northern Indians' — fraught source for histories of sexuality/colonial discourse)
