✓ VERIFIED vs scans n139+n141 (2026-07-07): header '1831 Mzo 11 S. Carlos, Gómez, Asesor del Territᵒ — Proceso contra el mayordomo García por haber azotado cruelmente á neófitos y gentiles de S. Diego'; the fiscal's 10-yr-presidio demand + Juan Bandini as *defensor* discrediting the gentile witnesses ('son de gentiles impuestos á echar mentiras') both confirmed. Proceso vs. the mayordomo García of the Estancia de Santa Isabel (SD) for cruelly flogging SD neophytes & gentiles caught for cattle-theft — 7 Indians incl. an old captain of the Ranchería de los Cogriñes[?] flogged to death ('se acabaron 3 rollos de varas,' García tore out the captain's hair). Fiscal del Valle sought 10 yrs presidio, condemning García (an ex-cabo who knew the rules) for punishing 'arbitrariamente.' Defender Juan Bandini (Diputación vocal/interim SD asesor) defended routine flogging — 'tan común en toda la Cal.,' 'el único medio q[u]e hay para contenerlos en los robos' — and argued the captain died of a hunger strike, not the beating. Asesor Gómez: 5 yrs presidio; Gov. Victoria confirmed 20 Apr 1831. → verbatim in Expanded Entry C. Orig. pp.332–510.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
