'Tres extranjeros llegaron á la frontera' — interrogation of three foreign deserters (per Gov. Victoria's 22 Aug order to identify their ship). James Dawson deposed: they deserted from the American otter-hunting brig *Grafton* (from the NW Coast; 24 crew + 33 Northwest-Coast Indian hunters; armed with 18 + 8 cannon + escopetas; took ~150 otters in 6 days on this coast; touched at San Quintín; the captain meant to hunt ~3 more months, then sail to Oahu). The captain had been at Monterey 2 yrs before on the 'Volunteer' trading horses. Deserted 'por mal trato.' Orig. pp.367–372.
