Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 173

Causa vs. Juan Pablo, a Santa Bárbara neófito, for inducing ~10 fellow neophytes to make a 'representación violenta' against their Padre Ministro — complaining the Padre had sold / was selling the mission's cattle, the roof-tiles of the mission houses, the mules, and the beach house (asset-stripping; recruited via Francisco Soya[?], Hilario the blacksmith, et al.). They petitioned alférez Domingo Carrillo. Fiscal sought 1 yr public works. ⭐⭐ Asesor Gómez sides with the neophytes: free Juan Pablo, and instead open an investigation into the Padre, who — if the complaint proves true — is to be told 'no estar facultado p[ar]a vender las fincas de la misión, y mucho menos p[ar]a acabar los alimentos y vestuario á los neófitos' when there are esquilmos to cover it. (End not present.) A striking mission-asset-stripping / indigenous-protest case on the eve of secularization (pairs with Expanded Entry E). Orig. pp.779–800.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
