The fullest account of the 1832 civil war. Ávila's 2nd petition

Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 218

The fullest account of the 1832 civil war. Ávila's 2nd petition: he headed a band of presidiarios 'para restablecer la autoridad legítima contra los que se levantaron en San Diego y destruyeron al… Cap. Político D. Manuel Victoria,' asking return of the arms confiscated in 1832 + a passport to return to Mexico by land. Zamorano's informe: the arms were seized not for the anti-Victoria action but later, 'por haberse puesto á la cabeza de una partida de presidiarios que alarmó de acuerdo con D. Vicente Sánchez, vecino… de los Ángeles, para destituirme'; narrates the pursuit (Alf. Anastasio Carrillo, 25 men), the split with Sánchez ~8 leagues past Mission San Buenaventura (Sánchez meant to attack San Diego, counting on Tte. Ibarra's division), the presidiarios abandoning Ávila 'por verse engañados' and surrendering at Mission Santa Inés. Figueroa returned Ávila's pistol but denied the passport 'hasta que finalice el tiempo por que fue destinado á este Territorio.' Orig. pp.675–9.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
