The mission's complaint against the New Mexico traders

Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 247

The mission's complaint against the New Mexico traders: since the 'Nuevo Mexicanos' arrived (trading *lonas*/canvas, buying horses) the mission lost many horses & 108 mules believed driven to New Mexico; details thefts at Rancho Asunción &c.; ⚠️ the traders sell aguardiente/wine to get the neophytes drunk (illicit — the Indians' goods being communal), causing 'muchos trabajos á los misioneros' (one got the horse-wrangler drunk → thrown, 2 broken ribs). Ringleader Pando captured then jumped bail. The mission-side complement to alcalde Carrillo's reports (Docs 228–229). Orig. pp.470–81.
