'Sublevación de Solís' — the Cabo Joaquín Piña salute causa

Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 90

'Sublevación de Solís' — the Cabo Joaquín Piña salute causa. Pacheco orders Ramírez to open a sumaria on a complaint (relayed via art. cmdt. José Fernández del Campo from SF cmdt. Ignacio Martínez, dated 20 Feb) against artillery Cabo José Joaquín Piña. Martínez's account: on 28 Nov [1829] at 1 PM, while he was at home with his family (alférez Francisco de Haro present), Piña entered and demanded 'con mucha altanería y falta de respeto' five rounds 'para saludar á la expedición' [of Solís]; despite Martínez insisting only the 5 tiros (cal. 3) be taken, Piña and artillerymen Maldonado & [Pedro/Lucas] Soto hauled off a whole cajón of ammunition to the artillery cuartel and, 'poco después comenzaron á hacer el saludo al entrar la expedición de Solís, habiendo izado la bandera nacional al verificarlo.' Witness Eusebio Soto: they took the cajón 'con el fin de hacer salva á la exp[edició]n de Solís que iba entrando,' and Piña said 'que él quería ir con todos los artilleros á correr la misma suerte que su Comand.te y su hermano, que sabía se hallaban presos en Monterey.' Escribanos cadet Raymundo Estrada then Sebastián[?] Rodríguez. Joaquín Piña's own deposition (n81–85) adds: a Russian frigate lay in the bay (Martínez was aboard it on 28 Nov); Solís's salute protocol was 5 shots on entry, 5 when the plan was read, 5 when the troops withdrew to quarters; the SF plaza was effectively handed over to Solís ('antes de entregar la plaza'; the courier José Sánchez carried Martínez's surrender-reply); and Martínez, the late ex-Gov. Luis de Argüello, alf. Sánchez & Haro were seen reading & praising Solís's plan ('muy lindo y muy bueno… como los mandamientos de la ley de Dios'). Piña refused to muster, retorting he 'no era indio de conquista.' Savage notes the rest of the causa is not present and that Piña was commanding the SB artillery detachment 31 Dec 1830. → verbatim depositions in Expanded Entry A below. Orig. pp.452–475, 476.
