Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 92

Orders a reserved sumaria into Alférez Domingo Carrillo's scandalous conduct one night at a fandango at the civilian Anastasio Leiva's house, where soldiers of his company had mixed in; Carrillo tried to march Cabo Juan Mª Marrón back to quarters, words passed, and the officer 'le prometió su venganza.' SD cmdt. reported it 5 Nov; Tte. Santiago Argüello opened the sumaria 10 Sept, escribano cadet Ignacio del Valle. Marrón's deposition: at ~11 PM, missing soldiers Ramón Sotelo & Esteban Higuera, he found them 'enfandangados' at Leiva's; Carrillo, 'un poco trastornado de la cabeza' from aguardiente, fronted him — 'Sí, sí, váyase pronto, porque si no, lo he de correr á palos' — and drew his sword. ⭐ Pío Pico (declaring himself 'vocal de la Diputación de este territorio') testifies he was at the fandango: Marrón challenged him '¿eres guapo ó eres mal criado?,' Pico drew and struck him, they grappled, Pico knocked him down with 'dos cintarazos,' then had Anastasio Machado return the cabo's sword. Other depositions (Javier Higuera, Sotelo, E. Higuera, Luis Morales) split between confirming and exculpating Carrillo. '(No se encuentra aquí más de esta sumaria.)' Orig. pp.504–528.
