'Instrucción sobre comportamⁱᵒ en la frontera de la Antigua California' (long, 10-leaf comprehensive frontier instruction) — to Tⁱᵉ Diego González (Loreto), relieving command of the *escoltas* of the Frontera de la Antigua Cal. (Rosario, Sto Domingo, San Vicente, La Borja, Sta Gertrudis), w/ Alférez José Velásquez (San Diego); Rivera y Moncada left under order of Comandante de Loreto Joaquín Cañete. Covers: escoltas' object = defense of missions & keeping *naturales* in peace under the Padres; supply by sea from Loreto (San Luis port) + semillas from missions w/ receipts; monthly *revistas* of horses/arms; desertion-reporting boilerplate. ⭐ Indian policy: repeated flights of Christian Indians to gentile *rancherías* (deaths on both sides) → use Christian-Indian intermediaries & the Capitanes Gentiles to persuade returns, treat gentiles w/ *afabilidad*, avoid troop entry into gentile rancherías, 'medios de piedad, dulzura y afabilidad… sin uso de la fuerza y rigor.' ⭐ Jurisdiction/discipline division: fraternal correction of neophytes → the Ministros; *toda causa de sangre o gravedad* → the Comandante de Frontera (sumaria, prisoner secured, referred up). ⭐⭐ LIMIT ON CORPORAL PUNISHMENT: the escolta may NOT execute *azotes* on a Christian or gentile Indian; when the Padres must correct 'sus hijos' they do so prudently, and a *cepo* term of 4–6 days is held in the guardhouse. Es copia, passed to the Presidio de Loreto for compliance
