«Creciente del Colorado — Sobre el ataque contra los Yumas» — Croix to Neve on campaign timing against the Colorado's flood season: by experience the Río Colorado becomes unfordable (imbadeable) in May, ruining the pastures of its banks and leaving the country useless to the troop, the caballada being unable to keep itself; the expedition against the Yumas, beginning in April, must therefore cease in May unless pasture is found for the horses on this side of the river — in which case aid could be furnished from here [Sonora] and the castigo of the Yumas achieved; otherwise the detachments must be withdrawn. Neve is to say which, one way or the other: if the first, so aid may be remitted; if the second, so it may be reported to His Majesty. ⭐ If he determines that operations cease until a more opportune time and thinks it well to profit from the pause, he should proceed at once to the founding of the Presidio, Missions & Pueblos of the Canal de Santa Bárbara — possibly with 15 or 20 men of Fages's company if needed for the new establishments' security — on the understanding that once the end is achieved the volunteers must return with all possible speed to this Province, «combatida incesantemente de las crueles hostilidades del Apache». Correction to this entry.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
