1775_ Sbre 8_ Loreto / Neve al Virey. Diezmos. [Gov. Felipe de Neve to the Viceroy, on tithes.] Savage transcribes Art. 7 of the Instruccion drawn up for this Peninsula by Jose de Galvez on granting solares and lands to the new settlers of the southern part: Despues de los 3 años satisfacerán los diezmos á S.M. p.a q. los aplique segun fuere de su Rl. agrado, como q. enteram.te le pertenecen, no solo p.r el patronato real absoluto q. tiene en estos dominios suyos, sinó tambien p.r ser novales, pues ha de producirse en terrenos hasta ahora incultos y abandonados, y q. se van á hacer fructiferos, á costa de los grandes dispendios y gastos q. causan las actuales expediciones. Neve then reports that, the tithes never having been collected, he meant to enforce the article, but learned that by commission of the jueces asedores (so written) of the Church of Guadalajara they had been collected by the P.e Presidente of these Missions Vicente de Mora for all the years fallen due to the present, without reserving the new settlers to whom suertes de tierra had been granted on that very condition, nor the old vecinos accustomed to pay tithes to that church; and that in three years both together amounted only to 100 cabezas de ganado vacuno y p 100. Not a bookkeeping interior: n155 ends at pp. 369-71 and n157 opens a fresh entry at p. 373, so this leaf is a self-contained entry.
