Contents: he has received the despacho de alf.z del Pres.o de Loreto issued in favour of José M. Estrada, who is to draw his pay from the 1st of the present month, José Velazquez being given his salida the same day and removed to S. Diego; in view of the real orden communicated to him on 10 Julio pas.o he will render the relevant informes; Enterado que deja á su arbitrio, que examinados los terrenos en que propuso situar dos pueblos disponga su ubicacion en los que le parezcan mas á propósito; and then, verbatim: Advertido que procure colocar el nuevo Presidio del Canal en terreno á propósito para siembras á fin de que á su abrigo pueda fomentarse con el tiempo otra poblacion, pero que esto no es posible por la suma escasez de agua que hay en el Canal. Que examinó los parages indicados entre S. Diego y el Canal y aunque en uno y otro encontró abundantes tierras y agua, advirtió impracticable su saca sino es con presa de cal y canto cuya obra no es practicable al presente, y que solo se tiene seguro, fácil y estable el Rio Porciúncula aunque distante 30 leguas del Pres.o Sta Barb.a This is the water-supply reconnaissance behind the siting of the two 1781 pueblos and of the Santa Barbara Channel presidio, written seven months before the founding of Los Angeles on the Rio Porciuncula.
