Verbatim parte y detalle of the assault & retaking of Mission La Purísima (16 Mar 1824)

Departmental State Papers, tomo I–II · BANC MSS C-A 27, document 167

Verbatim parte y detalle of the assault & retaking of Mission La Purísima (16 Mar 1824): an 80-man force with a 4-lb fieldpiece marched from San Luis Obispo and stormed the loopholed mission held by 400+ armed neophytes (who fought back with a cannon, 2 pedreros, muskets & a rain of arrows); the artisan Fran.co Pacheco charged with 20 cavalry á la arma blanca; Padre Fr. Antonio Rodríguez negotiated the cease-fire at 10:30 AM; rebels 16 dead + many wounded, attackers 1 dead (Miliciano Dionisio Ríos) + 2 lightly wounded; captured 2 pedreros, 16 muskets, 150 lances, 6 machetes ✓ leaf-verified 2026-07-15 (n147/n150 @ scale 2): the parte is first-person ('las valientes tropas que tengo el honor de mandar') and the closing certification reads *'Es Copia del parte y Estado dado por el teniente José Estrada … Monterey 6 de Octubre de 1826 — José Mª Estudillo'* → command = Estrada (field commander/author); Estudillo only certified the copy. This AGREES with Bancroft's account (which also credits Estrada) — the earlier 'flag vs. standard accounts' premise was mistaken; no conflict.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
