Departmental State Papers, Benicia, tomo Prefecturas y Juzgados I–VI · BANC MSS C-A 42, document 1218

'Sobre el libertinage de los indios' (FULL TRANSCRIPTION) — the LA judges answer the Governor's rebuke over lax control of the Indians' 'vida libertina': the obstacles are (1) the political instability of the country and (2) the disunity of the departmental authorities — the Sta Bárbara & Monterey Juzgados never answer their *reclamaciones* for fugitive Indians (and gente de razón); they ask H.E. to circularize the subaltern authorities to admit no Indian into the ranchos without a *pase legal* and to obey the *cartas requisitorias* for fugitives — then 'se hará algo duradera la vida de esa clase desgraciada que finaliza en menos tiempo por el exceso de sus vicios.' ⭐ candidate Expanded Entry — the judicial machinery of Indian labor-vagrancy control
