Departmental State Papers, San José, tomo I–III · BANC MSS C-A 44, document 73

'Salida para castigar á los Indios Gentiles' — a punitive expedition vs the ranchería whose Gentiles ate two mares: gather 15–20 men, fall on them 'sin ser sentido,' identify the malefactors & have their own companions give 25 azotes each; ⚠ 'al acercarse á la Ranchería no se disparará á ningún gentil… sin tirar á matar' (surround & seize the culprits, fire only if resisted, but NOT to kill); ⭐⭐ 'que no permita á los vecinos traer por fuerza gentiles á los trabajos, y necesitaren indios los paguen según costumbre' (do not force Gentiles to labor — pay them per custom). Death of Pedro Romero

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
