Departmental State Papers, San José, tomo I–III · BANC MSS C-A 44, document 733

'Ag.to 11 = Culpables en matar ganado' and the mesta ruling it carries. Julián Cantua and Andrés García and three others are found guilty in the killing of cattle, the two first to suffer six months arrest and the three latter fifteen days; and by his order the whole vecindario is to be told that, in accordance with the ordenanza de la mesta, all ganado mostrenco has no owner and consequently no one has any action to it, and no one has the faculty to give his own señal to another to kill cattle in the field even if he has a señal, 'pues esta no da propiedad sin estar acompañada del fierro'. Sola closes: 'Que yo deseo se haga en tiempo oportuno una razonable matanza por esa comunidad de Ganados alzados, p.a destinar sus productos al bien gral. del pueblo.'
