Departmental State Papers, San José, tomo I–III · BANC MSS C-A 44, document 740

'Nbre. 24. = Sobre Diezmos' [1817], a long reproving letter that continues onto n144. He has delivered to Sgt. Dolores Pico 76 fanegas of maize, 6 of wheat and one of frijol for the Diezmo; no more than 88 fanegas of wheat were collected, distributed among Ramón Martinez, Antonino Buelna and himself, with 71 head of ganado mayor remaining. Verbatim: 'mucho me ha desagradado ver la cortedad de la contribucion de un ramo tan sagrado como es el de los D.mos de N. S. M. I.' The comisionado should have witnessed the threshing and did not, being led by what the vecinos told him, 'quienes no han procedido con legalidad', and the list of what was sown 'no corresponde en nada á la fertilidad esperimentada; antes bien parece haber tenido ese pueblo una grandisima epidemia'. He demands the 1816 and 1817 lists of all contributors with what each has paid, noting that some are missing from the list just sent, the comisionado himself among them.
