State Papers, Missions, tomo I–V · BANC MSS C-A 50, document 226

*Población y Noticia sobre las Misiones Fernandinas… de S. Diego 1797* — 4,062 total / 3,789 Indians (+54 Indians, +42 gente de razón); new masonry-and-vault churches rising at San Juan Capistrano (53 × 10 varas = the 'Great Stone Church,' begun 1797) & San Gabriel; ⭐⭐⭐ settlement contrast: SJC & San Gabriel neophytes all live at the mission, but San Diego's live in their own rancherías, rotating weekly to attend Mass Sat/Sun (a dispersed model); industries = textiles + pottery (⚠ says '4 Misiones' but names/describes only 3 — the phantom 'S. Miguel' again)
