State Papers, Missions, tomo I–V · BANC MSS C-A 50, document 413

1827 SB *padrón* (4,008 souls, sin castas) with an extended *Notas* that is really a state-of-the-economy memorandum: the jurisdiction subsists on hide-and-tallow ('esquilmos de sebos y cueros… de sus ganados vacunos') + scarce grain; local traders being driven out by foreigners 'que en todo especulan, y con quienes no pueden competir'; wine & brandy ('vinos y aguardientes') named the only branch capable of driving internal commerce but crushed by an excessive tax; a proto-protectionist close — 'El hombre desmaya en un trabajo que no produce adelantos… cuando esa industria no se encuentra patrocinada por el Gobierno contra la ambición extranjera.' The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
