*Petición al Gefe Político á favor de los Indios* — a learned legal brief arguing the neophytes' aboriginal land title on the eve of secularization: 'todas estas tierras eran y son de los indios' (a scholastic proof via Esdras/Solórzano/Torquemada that the Indians descend from the land's first settlers, 'luego son suyas estas tierras'), the Indians having no Protector/Procurador in the Junta Provincial; then a point-by-point recitation of Leyes de Indias land protections (lands to Spaniards 'sin perjuicio de los indios'; reduced Indians keep waters/acequias/improved lands, never to be sold or alienated; the 4-league *ejido* + no *estancia* within 1.5 leagues; 'no se quiten las tierras que antes hubieren tenido'), citing the Sierra Gorda secularization precedent.
