Doc III-13. Hermenegildo Sal to acting Gov. Arrillaga, ‘Sobre la expedición de Vancouver’: the fullest Sal narrative of Vancouver's San Francisco visit. ✎✓ LEAF-VERIFIED 2026-10-06 across n303–n305 at full resolution; four errors corrected and two passages restored. The frigate under «el Capitan inglés Gorge Vancouver» anchored at Yerba Buena on the 13th and asked for a pilot; on the 15th Sal sent him «el soldado Alejo Miranda con orden de no recibir ninguna gratificación», and she came in and anchored in 4½ brazas. ✎ CORRECTED: Miranda was a SOLDADO, a private soldier, not an alférez. On the 19th Vancouver rode to Santa Clara with his escort, seven officers, «el Sargento Pedro Amador y 5 soldados» on horses Sal furnished. ✎ CORRECTED: FIVE soldiers, not eight. On the 21st the brig Chatham arrived, «al mándo del Caballero ‘Britor’ (Sic) (Supongo es Broughton)», anchoring in 3½ brazas. ✎ CORRECTED: the 21st, not the 18th; and the previous summary named PUGET as her commander, a name that does not appear on the leaf. ⭐ RESTORED, inside Savage's own quotation marks: «Que el puerto les a ‘aplacido tan bueno que dicen es puerto de los puertos de puertos’ (Sic)» — the English told Sal that San Francisco is the port of the ports of ports. ⭐ RESTORED, the size of the visit: the Discovery carried 4 lieutenants, 12 midshipmen, 2 surgeons, a pilot, 2 astronomers, a naturalist, a painter and «120 hombres de tripulación»; the brig 7 midshipmen, a pilot, a naturalist, 2 surgeons, an astronomer, a painter and «70 de tripulación». Sal supplied 11 cows, 7 rams and 10 arrobas of lard on the account of the San Blas commander, Juan de la Cuadra, and 2 cows, 2 calves, 4 rams, 30 pumpkins, 40 loose sacks of greens, a full cartload, 70 hens, 25 capons and eggs «dado gratis por él», out of his own pocket.
