Borica → Viceroy — the Otter incident (first U.S. ship in CA)

State Papers, Sacramento, tomo I · BANC MSS C-A 54, document 222

Borica → Viceroy — the Otter incident (first U.S. ship in CA). — ⭐⭐⭐ The American frigate (Savage 'el otro Boston'; Captain 'Door' = Ebenezer Dorr of the *Otter*) — the first U.S. ship to visit California, Oct–Nov 1796 — after being refused permission, forcibly landed English convicts/deserters at gunpoint on deserted beaches 'fuera de la vista de la batería' (5 on 6 Nov, 5 more on 7 Nov, 'con un par de pistolas en la mano'). ⭐ Borica's admission: with no naval force and only '30 ó 40 hombres,' he 'no podía resguardar la parte de costa que hay de este puerto para abajo.' The stranded English (carpenters, smiths, tailors, sailors) set to work at 1½ reales/day. → the Bay Area borderlands dossier (American perspective; the open coast), the presidio-decay dossier. ⚠️ Verify 'Dorr'/'Otter' reading.
