Doc IV-42 — Hermenegildo Sal → Gov. Arrillaga — his apology for Vancouver's Santa Clara trip. — ⭐ After Arrillaga's reprimand (oficio of 26 Mar), Sal apologizes for the 'mal procedimiento' of having permitted 'el capitán Inglés [Vancouver] con otros oficiales se hubieren internado hasta Santa Clara' — 'caí en un yerro.' Pleads that Vancouver's 'persuasiones' don't excuse him; Padre Fray Martín de Landaeta also observed Vancouver's 'mal modo'; the only way to have stopped it would have been to take away the presidio's horses. ⭐ The disciplinary aftermath of the Vancouver visit — Spanish command anxiety over Sal's accommodation of the British (cf. Doc 53). → the 1793 Bodega failure, Vancouver's *Voyage* (1798), the Sal papers.
