VERBATIM HEADING: '1796 Junio 30 San Fran.co / Pedro Alberni - á Gob.r Borica - sobre presidio de S.n F.co' GLOSS: Alberni to Governor Borica on whether the San Francisco presidio should be moved. SUBSTANCE: asked (interlined: 'en 16 del actual') to state, in view of his knowledge of the presidio of San Francisco, everything that occurs to him on whether or not it would be advisable to move that presidio to the hill immediately next to the fort that defends the entrance of the port, he answered: that at present it would not be sensible to move the presidio to the said hill, called de San Joaquin, because the two springs of water or sumps that there were on that hill have withdrawn. The ground on which the presidio now stands is firmer and less bad, being more sheltered than the other from the furious and continual winds and fogs. He goes on speaking of the very bad state of the presidio and of the danger that, once the rains begin, the whole will come down and the troops and families will have no shelter, not even under trees, for there are none in the whole vicinity. He is of the opinion that the fabric of the new presidio should be begun as soon as possible. NOTE: this is the companion piece to the already-published n361 row, engineer Alberto de Córdoba to Borica, 20 Jul 1796, on the same question.
