State Papers, Sacramento, tomo I · BANC MSS C-A 54, document 57

*terna* for the vacant Loreto alférez post (Bernal transferred to Sonora). — 1st: Pedro Amador (SF sgt, 34 yr 11 mo svc; present at the discovery of the SD & Monterey ports; recent expedition vs. fugitive Christian Indians — 'mató 7 gentiles y recogió 96 prisioneros entre chicos y grandes'). 2nd: José M.ª Ortega (Sta Bárb distinguished sgt, 21 yr; *correrías* in the San Diego uprising; but seeks retirement for 'extrema gordura' & inability to ride). 3rd: José Manuel Ruiz (Loreto sgt, 26 yr; frontier expert of Antigua Cal.). Gov.'s endorsement (Monterey, 13 Apr 1799) favors Ruiz; notes promoting him harms neither Amador (won't move his large family 800 leagues) nor Ortega (retiring). → the Indian-raiding dossier (Amador's 7-killed / 96-captured), prosopography.
