State Papers, Sacramento, tomo X–XIX · BANC MSS C-A 56, document 315

Serra's clemency letter after the 1775 SD Mission revolt — ✎ RE-READ AT FULL RES 2026-07-05 (verification pass): Savage's header = 'Sobre que se imponga leve castigo á indios' (✎ not '[poco]'). Against sending the gathered Monterey/SD presidio forces to 'escarmentar á los culpados y reprimir las fuerzas enemigas' (fearing 'despechos y mayores daños, como sucedió en semejantes casos'); the murdered padre left 'gozando de Dios'; ⚠ the famous phrase attaches to the surviving PADRES in this copy — 'á los ^P.P.^ qᵉ quedaran vivos, nos procurasen aguardar [sic] como las niñas de los ojos de Dios' (interlinear 'P.P.'; ✎ NOT 'the guilty who remain alive' as earlier read); and the wrongdoers' clause runs 'á los malhechores se les perdonase la culpa CON UN MODERADO CASTIGO, con lo qᵉ los verían practicar la ley que les enseñaban, de volver bien por mal' — pardon *with moderate punishment*, not unconditional. ⚠ Collate w/ Tibesar before quoting → see Entry 3

Correction to this entry.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
