⚠ NOT a narrative only — the OPERATIVE ORDER on n82 tells Figueroa to report “con imparcialidad y reservadamente” and to open “el correspondiente expediente para que pasandolo á la Corte Suprema de Justicia se haga efectiva la respontabilidad de quien haya incurrido en ella”: México instructing him to build a prosecutable record against the Californios who deposed Victoria. Victoria's own accounting names the conspirators (n75): “dos hermanos de Carrillo, varios deudos, Bandini el Comisario de hacienda, Pio Pico, Don Santiago Arguello, un Americano del Norte, Don José Maria Padres; pero sobre todos el Tent.l Coronel Echeandia” — the American identified on n74 as “un extrangero llamado Abel Stearns”. ⭐ Alleged attempted judicial murder: Victoria was to be deported in “la Goleta St.a Barbara, demasiado pequeña y espuesta quiza con la mira de que naufragase”, while “para alucionar al Pueblo se dijo al principio que fletaban la fragata Leonor”. Echeandía's five formal charges (n77) incl. “la decapitacion de un indio de un neofito llamado Atanacio”, protecting Vicente Sánchez “Alcalde intruso del Pueblo de los Angeles”, and the exile of José Antonio Carrillo and expulsion of Abel Stearns. Chronology fixed: revolution at San Diego “la noche del 29 de N.bre” 1831; Echeandía adheres 1 Dec; Los Ángeles pronounces 5 Dec; Victoria “sin admitir contestaciones comenzó á hacerles fuego”, is “herido gravemente” and “tuvo que rendirse á discrecion” (Cahuenga). ⭐ San José: Victoria took Alcalde constitucional Mariano Duarte to Monterey as a prisoner “mandandolo juzgar militarmente por mala versacion de los fondos municipales”, the true cause being that he had urged the Monterey ayuntamiento to demand the Diputación be convened. ⭐ M. G. Vallejo, José Ortega and Antonio María Osio had already protested against Victoria by letter of 18 Sept 1831, two months before the pronunciamiento. Victoria frames the whole quarrel as resistance to “la destruccion de las Misiones”, the vocales being “individuos que pertenecen al complot, interesados en la administracion de las misiones”. ⚠ ORIGINAL PAGINATION IS NOT CONTIGUOUS — Savage's note at the foot of n82: “(Yntercalado entre este documento se hayan varios que abrazan de 224 = 44.)”, i.e. other pieces are physically interleaved at orig pp.224–244 and are calendared separately from n83.
