Superior Government State Papers, Benicia, tomo XIX–XXI · BANC MSS C-A 58, document 175

Previously uncatalogued — recovered by the 2026-08-27 coverage audit: the document lay inside the declared span of a grouped entry covering n132-n151, which had passed every completeness check while concealing it. Heading verbatim: '+ 1841. Oct. 16. Mej. / Juan M. Duran al tesorero depart.l de ambas Cal.s - Mont. - Contabilidad' [= Juan M. Duran to the departmental treasurer of both Californias - Monterey - Accounting.] Notifies the California departmental treasurer that Enrique Virmond, of the Mexico City merchant community, has been paid 759 pesos 2 reales 8 granos, a sum Virmond had advanced to Jose Castro, capitan de la compañia presidial de Monterey; asks him to make the corresponding carga y data entries and to remit the certification of entero of the whole amount. Savage adds the gloss 'Duran es tesorero depart.l de Mej.' This is the most substantive California item on the leaves I opened: it documents the Virmond commercial house financing a named presidial captain and the Treasury settling the advance, a concrete instance of merchant credit substituting for the military payroll.
