Re José, Chief of an Indian tribe [San Diego area]

Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 115

Re José, Chief of an Indian tribe [San Diego area]: appeared with some of his people, was kindly treated; said some of his neighbors were constantly committing depredations, stealing horses, women & children — he wished to wage war agt them; was told the Gov. would not sanction his making war, but if the other tribes attacked his villages, he certainly had the right of defense & of chastising the invaders whilst fighting, but prisoners must be brought to the Alcalde. 'José acquiesced — is a good, trusty Indian, quite influential, his people numerous'; also resigns his own office, believing very little chance of the men agreeing to remain till end of year
