Synopsis of various political movements in that place: the place & vicinity filled with small politicians who want to make gain from funds to be raised by taxation, & the pickings of a large estate to be managed by them (Leidesdorff's); the Alcalde's offence is that he has a name & family & won't go to pieces to an unworthy course, hence the effort to get rid of the office in this District; also the movement in the Sonoma District to array the people against the Military Govt as they call it; there is some talent, and the estate of Leidesdorff, now controlled, enlisted in the movement. A long self-defense: 'Scandal & falsehood have deprived me of an even chance, except in a contest at the polls, and for political honors I have no ambition… In relation to the welfare of the town, we want a town council… If the only charge named is disposed of by facts submitted, or otherwise sufficiently met, pending the election of a 2º Alcalde, I will submit my acct & vouchers to the council now holding as such, & if satisfactory to them retire from the office as I desire'
