Statistical & other information on the district (per Gov's order of 18 Sept): with much difficulty complies, describing the country E. of the San Joaquín & Sacramento rivers; no mail & difficult to communicate with the interior; 'the tame Indians are what is called Christian Indians, & those civilized since the settlement of this valley by the Whites, and are employed in the shape of the fort & as vaqueros, & working men on the diff. farms — many of the wild Indians also come into the settlement at harvest time & assist in gathering the crops. The wild Indians are those who live in the mountains; those as far as the base of the mountains are only taken in this census; the whole side of the Californian mountain is thickly settled with wild Indians who are generally at war with the surrounding small tribes at the base, & do not visit the valley — their number I am not able to give; the Indns contained in this estimate are divided into abt 70 small tribes speaking some 20 different languages.' No schools in the district, the whites few, thinly scattered, 400 miles distant; a school house to be built next year in a town now being laid out 3 miles below the fort; a flouring mill by water power in operation, another & the saw mill will begin work in a few months; horse-power mills & the tannery have been in operation several years; dwelling houses principally of adobe, occupied by farmers
